Match Reports - Week 21

Saturday 1st February

For the umpteenth week the rain severely curtailed the WDFA fixtures, with only 6 of the scheduled games going ahead.

There were 2 quarter finals played in the John Fathers Oxon Junior Shield and once again, Carterton Rangers defeated a Premier Division side to move into the semi final. On Saturday they defeated neighbours Carterton Town A in a 7 goal thriller. Town were missing several influential players but can have no complaints about the result. Ben Pearce, James Barker Sam Giles and an own goal were Rangers scorers Lee Mosely, Marc Stayte and Chris MacNeil replying.

The all Premier Division tie between Charlbury and Witney Royals also promised to be a tight affair based upon the clubs league matches, but in reality it proved to a one sided affair with the home side running out convincing 5-0 winners. Player manager Craig McCallum was on target as were the father and son combination of Tony and Dan Bott.

There was only game in the Premier Division but it was a significant one at the foot of the table as Second bottom Chadington hosted third from bottom Aston. In tacky conditions Aston took an early lead as Phil Caswell fired home from close range. Chad leveled just before the break when new boy Jack Turner headed in Steven Hunt’s cross. In the 2nd half, Hunt headed home his 7th goal of the season from Mark Sheffield’s corner. James Adams and Hunt had further chances to increase the lead but they were squandered as Chad comfortably hung on to gain their first win of the season and move within a point of their opponents.

In the only game in Division 2, Hollybush had the opportunity to return to the top of the table if they were able to take 3 points off bottom side Witney Royals Res. The experience and ability of Lee Keyes was the difference between the 2 sides as bagged a five timer as Hollybush ran out 6-3 winners. Kev Davies added ‘Bush’s other goal with Andrew Partlett, Max Lucas and Richad Sims replying for the youthful Royals side.

Minster Lovell Res strengthen their 2nd place in Division 3 as they were comfortable 4-0 winners at Kingham Res. There were 2 goals apiece for Nathan Bowles and old-timer Craig Sallis.

Corinthians returned to the top of Division 4 as the were 4-2 victors against Bampton Utd Res. Corinthians were missing several first choice starters and others were playing against medical advice so the victory was even more satisfying. One of the walking wounded Frank Webb took his tally for the season to 22 as he grabbed a hat trick with Dan Hackett adding the other. For Bampton Nathan Beckett scored a brace.
