Jack Busby Cup Final

Hailey Res retain the trophy

Hailey Res last night retained the Jack Busby Cup after narrowly defeating Chadlington Res 2-1 in front of a large crowd at Clanfield.

The Division 3 side dominated the early exchanges and the physical presence of George Slatter and Rocky Burton caused the Hailey back line no end of problems and Slatter saw his goal bound effort tipped onto the post by stand in keeper Ben Horne,
Hailey's first attack saw Seb White let fly from 25 yards and the effort clipped the outside of the post.
The same player then saw a close range effort blocked by keeper Barry Denvir.
Hailey's dominance was rewarded with a goal as Tom Evans struck a bullet header from a corner giving Denvir no chance.
It should have been 2 just before the break as a defensive mix up saw the loose ball fall to Luke Perkins 25 yards out but his finish lacked composure and drifted well wide,

Within minutes of the restart it should have been 2-0. A cross from the left fell invitingly to Moh Semlali but somehow he blazed the ball over. Chad's joy was short lved however as from the next attack, Gary Mitchell was put through and he made no mistake from 15 yards.
This seemed to spur Chad on and only a great tackle from Ash Mills prevented Burton pulling one back, but following an almighty goal mouth scramble Slatter poked the ball home from close range.
It was now all Chad and they were camped in the Hailey area. An great appeal from a penalty for handball was turned down by the ref and then in added time a fine cross across goal was deflected into the hands of Horne who knew nothing about it.

But it was the Hailey players who celebrated on the final whistle as the two younger players in their team Cameron Trowbridge and Sean Wood lifted the trophy,
