Season Preview

Here goes the legendary Season Preview. See what you think and add your comments on the Forum.

Premier Division

AC Finstock
Notable player movement: In Josh Russell
One to Watch: Chris Thomas
Last Year: R/up Division 1
Prediction: 8th

Finstock exceeded all expectations by gaining promotion in the last game of the season last year and they have retained the bulk of last season’s squad.
Chris Thomas was the division’s leading goalscorer last season and is he can continue this form, then they may have the ability to stay up. If however he struggles the team may make a quick return. Additionally only having one team may mean resources may be stretched.

Charlbury
Notable Player Movement – None Known
One to Watch: Craig McCallum
Last Year: 3rd
Prediction: 4th

Combe
Notable Player Movement: Out – Tim Wyatt, Matty Currill
One to Watch: Sam Hibberd
Last Year:
Prediction: 9th

Matt Baker and Craig Worth return from Injury/travelling and possibly Patch Gardner from Uni so will add more fire power and stability to team although loss of Tim a big blow. Ali Morris starts university so will be another missing come term time.

After starting well last term Combe then flirted with relegation, but they are a young side and will have learnt from last year. But expect to see them fighting to stay up again.

Ducklington
Notable Player Movement: Out – Matt Gorman, Martin Latimer Anthony Lune In – Harry Burnley, Tom West
One to Watch: Adam Clarke
Last Year: 2nd
Prediction: 5th

Martin Ferreira takes the helm with Rhod King at the Glebelands this season and they may find things a struggle. All of last years strikers have departed, Matt Gorman has retired, Martin Latimer has moved away and Jack Morton is off to Uni. Young Jordan Cormack who played in the B team last year could be leading the line.

Expect the defence, with the excellent Dan Molony, to be strong but they will not score enough to be serious title contenders

Hailey
Notable Player movement: In Ryan Pratley, James Fleming. Out: Shaun Evans, Dean Mays, Tom Perry, Richard Sutton, Davy Cooper
One to Watch: Joe Fullerton
Last Year: Champions
Prediction: Champions

Only dropping 5 points all last season was a tremendous achievement for Hailey and once again they will start as Premier Division favourites. There have been some major losses to the squad and Alex Bolt could also be leaving to fulfil RAF duties.

Saying that they have the best striker and midfield players in the division in Joey & Sean King. A few of the younger Reserve players from last year will be expected to make the step up and Joe Fullerton could be the leading light.

Hanborough
Notable Player Movement : None
One to Watch : Craig Johnston
Last Year: 5th
Prediction: 6th

Paul Townsend again has hold of the reins at Roosevelt Rd, but they close season has seen very little player movement, either in or out.

Duncan Griffin missed the whole of last year through injury and his return will be a big boost to the side and he should link well with Craig Simpson.

Scoring goals was a problem last year and no one managed more than 6 in the league, however they did have the meanest defence in the division. If they manage to score more then expect a better season.

Kingham
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Sam Philpott
Last Year: 9th
Prediction: 11th

Think it would be fair to say that no one (well me) expected Kingham to stay up last season and as little or no information has been forthcoming from the back of beyond, I will tip them to go down again.

I did not see them in action last year, but was reliably informed that although the worked hard for each other, there was a certain lack of quality in key area.
A season of struggle and ultimate relegation.

Minster Lovell
Notable Player movement: Not Known
One to Watch: Nathan Harris
Last Year: 8th
Prediction: 10th

Sadly no info has been forthcoming from Wash Meadow. So your guess is as good as mine what has happened during the summer. Lead to believe that club legend Craig Sallis has upped ship and joined the Brize revolution.

Because of the lack of positive information, I will assume a season of doom and gloom and a battle to avoid the drop.

Spartan Rangers
Notable Player Movement – In Dave Cross - Out Jamie Timms
One to Watch: Dave Cross
Last Year: 6th
Prediction: 3rd

Alfie Saunders is once again in charge of Spartan for the ??th consecutive season. Expect Spartan to be the winners in the Cross / Timms player swap with the burly striker sure to score a hatful in tandem with ‘buddy’ Matt Townsend.

As usual with Spartan sides they will be well organised and hard to break down, but I do not think they have the necessary flair for a title. Although they would be a good bet for a cup.

Witney Royals
Notable Player Movement: Out Dave Cross – In Jamie Timms
One to Watch: Jack Kennedy
Last Year: 4th
Prediction: 2nd

Luke Chadwick takes over as main man at Royals this year and he will have to do without the goal scoring ability of Dave Cross. Matt Thompson was the only other player to hit double figures last season so that is a problem to be addressed. RAF man Loz Prior is the main hope in this department.

Their defence was the strength last year and the addition of Jamie Timms will help. Ankle trouble means Steve Green takes over in the sticks.

If they can find a proven goalscorer expect them to challenge.

Wychwood Forest
Notable Player Movement: Out Andy Stock
One to watch: Dan Sollis
Last Year: Champion Div 1
Prediction: 7th

Chris Jordan retains the mangers baggy green shirt at Wychwood as his boys make their Premier Division bow. Their is plenty of experience across the side with many players have played in the top flight for other clubs.

They did exceptionally well last season not losing a game and the league’s leading goal scorer from last year, Craig Isle has stepped up from the Res to join an already impressive forward line.
Whilst I do not expect them to be challenging for the title I cannot see them in the relegation battle either.

Division 1

Aston
Notable player movement: Out Joe & Ryan Hewer
One to Watch:
Last Year: 8th
Prediction: 11th

With last season’s leading scorer Ryan Hewer departing for pastures new, Aston may find this season a struggle.
A small squad was stretched last season and with better players going it is hard to see how they will be challenging for promotion and it may be that they will be genuine relegation candidates.

Brize Norton
Notable player movement: In Chris Hunt, Colin Tyrell, Pat Crowley, Craig Sallis, Nathan Allum, Dan King. Out: Steve Morgan
One to Watch: Chris Hunt
Last Year: 10th Premier Division
Prediction: 3rd

A close season of change at Brize has seen new managers Simon Cook and Mark Hedges build almost a completely new team. They certainly wont be lacking for experience with the new signings having a combined age of 483 and I am sure they will make up the lack of pace with guile, skill and the odd off the ball dig in the ribs.

Any team that finishes above them this year will have done well and will be in the shake up for honours.

Chad Park
Notable player movement: Not known.
One to Watch: George Slatter
Last Year: Champions Division 2
Prediction: 6th

With no info coming from Chad it is guess work time. Back to back promotions, obviously mean they are a decent side and last season they again scored goals for fun with the impressive Slattter leading the way.

They also have in Danny Harding one of the best keepers in the league. They may have found their level this season however and expect a season of consolidation.

Chippy Town
Notable player movement: In: Wayne Beauchamp, Richard McCabe
One to Watch: Rhys Warner-Carter
Last Year: 4th
Prediction: 2nd

Chippy were only a couple of points away from promotion last season and will not be far away again this term.
Manager Andy Watson two new signings have both stepped down from the Senior League, and they have lots of striking options and if need be the old git can always throw himself onto the field to show they young ‘uns how it is done.
Expect them to be in the mix.

Ducklington Reserves
Notable player movement: In Charlie Fisher
One to Watch: Frank Clarke
Last Year: 7th
Prediction: 8th

Last season was a typical Duck Res season, wining a few, losing a few and doing well in one of the cups.
Expect much of the same again this year. They do not have the ability to cope with some of the first teams in the league, but they should be too good to avoid the drop.

They will be hoping for a good run in one of the cups and to finish as the highest placed Reserve side for the 3rd year in a row.

FC Chequers
Notable Player Movement: In Shaun Evans, Joe Hewer, Ryan Hewer, Nathan Beckett:
Out: Luke Simmonds, Perry Tinson
One to watch: Danny Rayfield
Last year: 3rd
Prediction: Champions

After wining one cup final, getting to the final in another and finishing 3rd in the league you would think that last season was a god one for FC Chequers? But ultimately I would imagine they were disappointed not to achieve their goal of promotion.

They have made some excellent close season signings and you cannot see their defence being breached often. Perhaps the biggest problem could be keeping all their players happy?
Expect more silverware again in Corn St.

FC Mills
Notable player movement: None known
One to Watch: Warren Senior (ahem)
Last Year 9th
Prediction: 9th

New Manager Warren Senior will be hoping to put last season’s “SeniorGate” controversy behind them and hope that all people talk about is their exploits on the field.
Without their points deduction they would have finished in 5th place and will be hoping for a similar position this season.

However with the division appearing to be much stronger this year that be beyond them. Goals are always likely with Senior, Rob DeBanks and Mev Gundem giving them striking options, but they let in too many goals last year and so will need to tighten up at the back.

FC Nomads
Notable player movement: Out Pat Crowley, Daz Craig. In: Richie Godwin, Stuart Harris.
One to Watch: Mickey Hole
Last Year 2nd Division 2
Prediction: 7th

Nomads have the same old gits shouting and moaning in charge and will have much the same squad as last year with only Pat Crowley and Daz Craig joining RAF Bampton in the N Berks.

Raiding Witan house just so we can talk old school football they have former Brize player Richie Goodwin and a Stuart Harris (Spartan). Two players not needing bus passes and who should be assets if work doesn't get in the way are Dave O'Fee and Jack Costar.
Expect a comfortable mid-table finish.

Hanborough Reserves
Notable player movement: None
One to Watch: Pete Andrews
Last Year: 10th
Prediction: 12th

At the time of writing Hanborough were without a manger although it was hoped a couple of the ‘senior players’ would take the helm.
With no major influx into the club, last years side will be tasked with keeping them in the division.

There are several young lads ready to make the step up to Senior football and whether they will be good enough to keep them in the division remains to be seen.

North Leigh A
Notable player movement: In Luke Simmons, Sam Duthie, Sam Doherty, Dan Taylor, Gareth Beale, Sam Burnell, Lloyd Lewis, Andy Mcintosh. Out: Tom Bennington
One to Watch: Jason Lonsdale
Last Year: 5th
Prediction: 5th

Pablo Lewis will probably be the youngest manager in the WFDA as he takes the helm at Nor Lye. With the club having no reserve team a number of the players have stepped down to the A team. Expect a big showing from the side and if they can gel early on they could be in the shake up for the promotion places.

West Witney
Notable Player Movement; In Matt Boyd, Jamie MacDonagh, Steve Morgan, Steve Reed, Mark Haydon, Gary Thomas, Danny MacDonagh, Davy Cooper, Andy Salkeld
One to Watch: Davy Cooper
Last Year: Bottom Premier Divsion
Prediction: 4th

Tony McLeman makes his managerial debut at relegated West Witney and will be hooping to buck the trend of previous seasons.

Some impressive pre-season results adds to the optimism and with Davy Cooper joining the manager up front they can expect to score plenty of goals. The side is also more youthful, so expect a strong challenge for promotion.

Witney Wanderers
Notable player movement: Out: Wes Phillips, Roger Perreira
One to Watch: Luke Rippington
Last Year: 6th
Prediction: 10th

Kim Phillips must be in line for longest managerial reign in the division as he again takes the helm at Wanderers.
The loss of their mercurial Brazillian (no not Wes) will have a big impact on the side as he has gone to seek fame and fortune in Didcot.

There is plenty of talent in the side and if they can tighten up a defence that at times leaked too many goals last season, they should be in the cluster in the middle of the table.

Division Two

Brize Norton Reserves
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Rob Hook
Last Year: Relegated
Prediction: 7th

I’ve got to be honest – I know almost nothing about who will be playing for Brize Norton Reserves this year. They clearly struggled in Div 1 last year during a transitional season for the club, although Rob Hook’s name appeared in the scorers column occasionally. If they inherit some first team players they could flourish in Div 2 but the proof will be in the pudding as they say.

Carterton A
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Scott Walters
Last Year: Promoted
Prediction: 1st

Carterton A have long been touted as one of the sides to watch from the lower divisions, and their heavy dose of youth with a dash of experience is the reason why. Veterans Will Griffiths and Scott Walters provide a strong spine to the team with plenty of speed and enthusiasm supplied by the youngsters. They should be a formidable force in Division 2 this season.

Charlbury Town Reserves
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Ben Godfrey
Last Year: 6th
Prediction: 11th

A more stable force in recent seasons, Charlbury Reserves now have a number of promising young players, some of whom are often brought into the first team fold. It is not clear who will be at the helm this season but experienced players such as Mark Deller, Carl Siford and Gary Jones are likely to feature regularly, along with tricky young winger Ben Godfrey.

Ducklington A
Notable Player Movement: Out – none In – none
One to Watch: Paul Neale
Last Year: 8th
Prediction: 9th

You would be hard-pressed to find two more experienced hands than Scott Newcombe and Waine Evans but that is who will be taking charge of Duck A this year. Some players have apparently left but the nucleus of the side is the same, possibly with a few B team players stepping up.

Jason Hirschfield is backed to run the show from midfield and Paul Neale (described as “evergreen” in the bumpf) will be relied on to get goals.

Hailey Reserves
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Les Quick
Last Year: Promoted
Prediction: 6th

Another side forged on a mix of youth and experience, Hailey had an excellent season last year in Division 3, but may find things more challenging this year. A few old faces can be expected, as well as some younger blood which looked truly promising at the back end of last season. Rumours that Martin Friend had been given the captain’s armband and a midfield general role have proved wide of the mark. Should be a tough proposition at home.

Middle Barton
Notable Player Movement: Out – none In – two or three 16 year olds
One to Watch: Nick Pickup
Last Year: 5th
Prediction: 5th

Middle Barton were a solid outfit last year, landing in Division 2 in their very first season. Paul Kay’s side more than held their own in the league and will expect more of the same this year. They will look to improve on last year’s 5th place finish, although that may be a tall order with few new signings. Ex-Tackley forward Nick Pickup is the goal-getter but Roberto Neris is also a key player between the sticks.

Milton
Notable Player Movement: Firsts and reserves now merged
One to Watch: Doug Keen and Jim Littlewood
Last Year: Relegated
Prediction: 8th

This season Milton are being managed by Pat “Ginger” King, who has made the step up from the now defunct reserves. Diddle Keen will be donning the gloves, with a mature back four in front of him. Midfield sees Pip Benfield dropping back from his striking role, while Adam “too tall” Wallington is the new wonderkid in attack.

King is apparently more than happy with his assembled squad, and is said to be looking for a top four finish.

Southrop
Notable Player Movement: Out - none In – Dave Knight, Dan Jones, Gareth Edmunds, Bradley Bridgewater, Tim Hodgetts
One to Watch: Ryan Moore and Bradley Bridgewater
Last Year: 4th
Prediction: 4th

The typical image of Southrop as a home for overweight veterans enjoying Indian summers has now been blown out of the water with a number of young players joining the club. Manager Mark Wilson and his assistant Roger Alder are hoping to again push for promotion with their new-look side.

Ryan Moore was a threat last season and he will be joined in attack by the equally youthful Bradley Bridgewater.

Spartan Rangers Reserves
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Dan Hall
Last Year: 9th
Prediction: 13th

Spartan have flirted with relegation from Division 2 for three seasons now and do not appear to have signed many players to redress the balance. This may all be part of an elaborate decoy to take the division by storm. Or it may not.

Their side has a younger look these days and they are always tricky on their own patch – if you can find it beneath the dog turds.

Stanton Harcourt
Notable Player Movement: Out – Dale Cox, Tom McCudden In – Arron Mullis, Marc Foster, Sean Lalor, Tom Bennington
One to Watch: Ben Kibble
Last Year: Promoted
Prediction: 3rd

With the loss of talisman and Alan Carr impersonator Dale Cox for pastures new, and Tom McCudden to Freeland, Stanton may not be quite as strong as in last season’s promotion tilt. However, they have retained much of the squad, including Ben Kibble and George Woodcock. They claim to be aiming for a top three finish in style – that’s how they roll, apparently.

Two Rivers
Notable Player Movement: Out – half of Fabulous Baking Boys In – very few
One to Watch: Unknown
Last Year: 10th
Prediction: 12th

After a rocky first few months Two Rivers managed to steer themselves away from relegation last term with the return of inspirational manager Martin Prew. Unfortunately they have now found themselves victim to a mass exodus of their Polish contingent and attempting to scrape a squad together. The upshot being that I have very little clue what their team will look like come September 4th and, quite possibly, neither do they.

Witney Royals Reserves
Notable Player Movement: Not known
One to Watch: Gary Nicholson
Last Year: 3rd
Prediction: 2nd

Royals Reserves were extremely good last year and had many players good enough for their first team. It seems this year will be more of the same, although they oddly cite Spartan Rangers Reserves as one of their main challengers for the title (told you that lot were up to something). Karl Shepherd averaged about two goals a game last year (and three manicures), so expect some high scoring affairs in their fixtures.

Wootton Sports
Notable Player Movement: Out – Greg Finnemore, Simon Collins In – none
One to Watch: Tom Williams
Last Year: 7th
Prediction: 10th

Wootton continue to be run by the father-son combo of Kevin and Leigh ‘Bagpuss’ Grant, the latter of whom is reportedly looking to hang up his goalkeeping gloves if a suitable replacement can be found. Perennial mid-table battlers, they will once again be looking to upset a few of the big boys some weeks and scrape 11 men together on others. Lewis Hooper is a driving force from the back while Tom Williams on the wing is hotly-tipped both to breach defences and win all of this season’s Bastian Schweinsteiger lookalike contests

Division Three

FC Chequers Reserves
Manager: Simon Moore (Sub)
Players In: Dan Cox (Eynsham), Shane Brown (Spartan), Doug ‘Crazy Legs’ Mulvihill (FC Mills), Stan (Kurdistan), Stan’s Mate (Somewhere near Stan), James Juste (Milton),
Players Out: Ant Barlow  (Witney Royals), James Lodge (Retired), Scott Perkins (Carterton), Adam Izzard (Semi Naked Gay Wrestling), Stuart Lodge (The Kassam Stadium), Chris Owen (Brize Norton),
One To Watch: Tom Gonzales
Last Season: 5th
Prediction: Champions

The reserve side is strengthened this year, due to several quality signings at the club. Regardless of whether the new boys line up in the first XI or the reserves; this seasons side will be stronger. Chequers have also claimed several players back from the injury list which blighted much of the second half of last season. This will also give the squad more depth and they shouldn’t face the same problems again this year.

With Dan ‘The Watts said I was ok to play’ Cox back in goal and a vastly strengthened and experienced back 3 or 4, Corn Streets only REAL pub team will be hard to beat this season.

FC Mills Reserves
Manager: James Rogers
Players In: Jordan Hare
One To Watch: Jordan Hare
Last Season: 11th
Prediction: 5th

Freeland A
Manager: Paul Mills
Players In: Everyone south of the A40, including, Adi Williams, Jack Rubenstein, Tom Matthews, Dan Alsworth (All ESSC), Steve Carvey (FC Mills), Andy Hemming
Players Out: Chris Collier (Retired)
One To Watch: Neil Swan and John Pyrah
Last Season: 10th
Prediction: Relegated

Reports from the training ground indicate a renewed sense of optimism. In his 4th year at the helm, Paul Mills has dipped his managerial wick into the B side to take the pick of the young lads Freeland had cultivated last season. The good news is Freeland have enlisted the help of a Football League coach. The bad news is, he’s from Swindon.

Pre-season results have been encouraging and Mills’ now feels that after 3 years of disappointment that THIS is finally the season his patience pays off.

Eynsham SSC
Manager: George Roberts
Players In: Max Leach
Players Out: - Adi Williams, Jack Rubenstein, Tom Matthews, Dan Alsworth (All Freeland),
One To Watch: Max Leach
Last Season: 4th
Prediction: 4th

ESSC hope to go one better than last season and win promotion to Division 2

FC Hollybush
Manager: Peter Aldous
Players In: Dan Smith (North Leigh), Dan Tasker (Brize), Glenn Wheeler (Minster Lovell)

Players Out: Craig Williams & Mike Wharton (Both Clanfield) Arrun Baker (retired)

One To Watch: Ben Reynolds

Having been promoted to Division 3, the 'Bush' are hoping for a solid season around mid table. Have lost a couple of very good players but signing Dan Smith & Dan Tasker should add plenty of goals and resigning Ben Reynolds for a 2nd season is a massive boost to their defence.

Minster Lovell Reserves
Manager: Cody Davies
Players In: Collis King, Mykel Ryan, Sam Hatton, Dan Harwood, Josh Bennett, Liam Crawford, Chris Barber, Lamar Rowe
Players Out:
One To Watch: Liam Rowe

Young Cody Davies takes the reigns from Mick Ody this season and I have been reliably informed he will be calling the shots from between the sticks, not upfront as was reported in last season’s preview.

Minster now have the token blend of youth and experience. The younger lads apparently all like to shower with the old chaps at the same time ???. Defensive stalwart, Adam Bennett looks to be the white Sol Campbell for the Wash Meadow lads while they look for inspiration from Daniel Oakey.

They are keen to cut their teeth on most teams this season, but particularly wanting to beat any team Ben Davies plays for.

Witney Royals A
Manager: Ben Readhead & Kearse Simpson
Players In: Nathan Langford (Freeland), Ben Green (Chadlington), Anthony Barlow (FC Chequers), Dan Tidman (Up North Somewhere)
Players Out:
One To Watch: Nathan Langford
Last Season: Division Four Champions
Prediction: 3rd

Royals’ ambition is to gain a successive promotion further to promotion from Division 4. The squad will always be stronger when Gaz Nicholson & Rob Priestley (RAF players are available). The inclusion of Nathan Langford who will play when Freeland Reserves dont have a game is a big boost and the shot stopping ability of Michael Burke is always a great boon to the side.

West Witney Reserves
Manager:
Players In: Several
Players Out:
One To Watch: Jamie Goodwin
Last Season:
Prediction: 4th

Several new additions from Tower Hill plus some other promising youngsters have injected new life into West Witney Reserves this year. They have very healthy numbers in both sides and it may prove tough for some of the experienced faces to get a look in. They expect some tough games in Division 3 but do expect to have a more enjoyable season than the last few in Division 2. Not many outgoing players for thee reserves although long time club men Alex Vaughan (Witney Royals) and Jorge Granja (unattached) have left for pastures new.

Overall a mix of experience and much-needed youthful enthusiasm should see us have a productive season. Our player to watch is Jamie Goodwin, who is relishing 'playing with the kids' so far in pre-season.....

Division Four

AFC Marlborough
Manager - Bruce Wilson
Players In: Ryan Moran Ross, Jonny Clements, John Omole
Players Out: Sam Wheeler
Last Season:
Prediction: 6th

Young prospects - 16yr Old Midfielder Ryan Moran-Ross, 20yr Old Striker John Omole, 18yr Old Defender Nathan Lawes.

AFC Marlborough will be hoping for a top half finish.

Carterton Pumas
Manager: Mark Vaughan

Combe Reserves
Manager: Dave Snook
Players In:
Players Out: Carl Burnham, Nick Wyatt, Dan Hibbs, Stuart Hurley
Last Season: 9th
Prediction: 7th

Dave Snook, alongside his managerial duties has decided to play in the back 4 with Dave Creasy, adding much needed experience to the side. A few players including Vinny Snell will leave for University during term time so will be a blow to the team.

Ducklington B
Manager: Gareth Sparrowhawk
Players In: Lots
Players Out: Lots
One To Watch: Bradley Olive

Last Season: N/A
Prediction: 2nd

Manager Gareth Sparrowhawk target’s a top 4 finish but would be satisfied with mid-table mediocrity.

Eynsham SSC Reserves
Manager: Paul Meredith
Players In: Mark Ryder, Joe Leach, Ash Skinner, Andy Savin, Shaun Rowbotham
Players Out: Gareth Jones
One To Watch: Mark Ryder
Last Season: Last (Wooden Spoon)
Prediction: 11th

Freeland B
Manager: Matt Hardy
Players In: Tom Warby, Tom Mason
One To Watch: Marc Buckingham and Tom Forkner

Matt Hardy dons his managerial sheepskin coat for another season at Freeland. This time with the B side. He inherits last years existing side, full of young players, but with the additions of Freeland’s First team rejects, including Richard Stanley, Adam Longford and Tom Mason.

Wychwood Forest Reserves
Manager: Nigel Jones
Players In: Jamie Laws, Alan Andrew and the returning Olly Bush.
One To Watch: Kevin Webb
Last Season:
Prediction: 9th

After finishing 4th last season and keeping most of the squad together the a source from the Wychwood camp said “I am quietly confident we could challenge for the division 4 title this season”. With the return of Olly Bush adding to a strike force of Kevin Webb and goal machine Craig Isle who is also staying its going to be one very interesting season.

Priority was to strengthen the back 4 to stop shipping the goals which they have now done.
