Midweek Drama Sparks Cup Campaigns Into Life

Ted Young Senior Cup - Group 1
With the lighter evenings mid-week kick offs finally returned to the Witney and District as another round of fixtures played out across Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

On Tuesday, In Senior Cup Group One, Carterton Rangers recorded back to back victories as they defeated Charlbury in a five goal thriller at Monahan Way. For the second game in a row, Luke Manning found the back of the net, Jamie Macdonogh adding a second for Rangers. Sam Stitch got Charlbury back into the game and Jacob Hancocks scored Charlbury’s second only for Steve Murphy to break Charlbury’s hearts and grab an important three points for Rangers.

Hailey received a walkover victory against Minster Lovell to remain unbeaten.

Group 1 opened right up during Wednesday’s games as both games finished in score draws.
Chadlington continue to surprise as they stole points off former top side Hook Norton. Chadlington’s goal came from Konrad Wezyk but Chadlington also managed to put the ball into the back of their own net for Hook Norton’s equaliser. It finished 1-1 as Chadlington moved onto 4 points, meanwhile Hook Norton tumble down to third after the midweek games.

Carterton remain winless since the resumption after being held to a 1-1 draw by Spartan Rangers. Jason Lonsdale scored for Carterton with Frank Clarke restoring parity for Rangers.

Ted Young Senior Cup - Group 2
Following the midweek fixtures, five teams are now tied on 6 points with it all to play for in Group Two.
Enstone recorded back to back wins on as they brushed past Bletchington. Enstone were three up by half time and comfortable thanks to goals from Andy McCabe, Reece Bayliss and Josh Hunt. Bletchington managed to win the second half at least, Mason Connelly dispatching a second half penalty in the only goal of the half but it finished 3-1.

Carterton Reserves bounced back from their defeat at the weekend to record a narrow win over Wootton Sports. Once some of their players arrived at the correct Wootton, the game was able to start and a good battle commenced. Both sides battled hard and Wootton had the better of the possession and the chances but failed to find the back of the net. Ryan Colleton was more clinical for Carterton as he scored a superb goal to give Carterton the lead, and added a second to give them some breathing room. Karl Ware did find the back of the net for Wootton but it wasn’t enough and Carterton held on for the three points.

On Wednesday Milton suffered their first defeat as Witney Royals recorded back to back wins in the competition. Eliott Major, Reuben Wertheim and Kieran Colwell all scored one each to put three on the board for Royals. Harry Lake replied in vain for Milton who drop down to third.

Stonesfield came back from behind on two occasions before grabbing victory over Hailey Reserves. 20 minutes in, Sean King finished smartly from close range following a knock down to give Hailey the lead, but James Little replied just 8 minutes later for Stonesfield and the game rolled into half-time level. The second half exploded into life as both teams scored again, inside the opening 10 minutes.

Mo Semlali stole a march on sleepy defenders at the back post to head home following Cam Foster’s cross from the right but five minutes later Stonesfield were level again thanks to Raffy Rice firing home. It took a defensive mix up from Hailey to gift Stonesfield their third.

Rice poached the ball off a Hailey boot and stormed into the area, rounded Hailey keeper Cody Davies and snuck a shot inside the near post despite the retreating Hailey defence. A last second free-kick for Hailey saw all 22 men inside the box and despite the chaos, Hailey’s last shot floated agonisingly over. Stonesfield move to the top of Group Two on goal difference as a result of the narrow win.

Watts Junior Cup - Group 3
Siege hosted North Leigh at Carterton Rec where all the goals came in the second half. A lacklustre first 45 ended goalless but not before Steve Lazarus made a world class save from the only meaningful shot on target. A Craig Mays goal gave North Leigh the lead but that only served to spark Siege into life.

Rob Marsh rolled back the years to head home an equaliser before Andy Makepiece gave Siege the lead as he turned inside his man and smashed one into the top corner. It was left to midfield maestro Kev Lewis to secure the points as he fired in a late free kick as Siege maintained their 100% start to life in Group 3.

Ducklington and Eynsham played out a five goal thriller full of plenty of drama as both sides looked for their second victories. It was 1-1 at half time, Dan Stanley’s opener cancelled out by Brad Olive putting the ball into his own net. The second half exploded into action as 16 year old Jasper Winder fired Ducklington into the lead in only his second game in men’s football, a screamer that whistled past the keeper and into the back of the net.

Ducklington should have had daylight, only for Ed Smith’s awful penalty to be comfortably saved by Karl Grossman. Eynsham then equalised through Ben Kinchin but the drama didn’t end there. In the 85th minute Ducklington were awarded their second penalty but in a horrible case of déjà vu, Dan Stanley took an equally awful penalty that was well saved again by Grossman. Just as it looked like the points would be shared Duck were awarded their third penalty and young Winder took the ball and showed his elder team mates how it was done, slamming the ball home from 12 yards to spark wild celebrations for the home team to make it two wins from two.

Watts Junior Cup – Group 4
Josh Walkington’s hat-trick fired Spartan Rangers Reserves to their first victory in the Junior Cup but they didn’t have things all their own way in a seven goal encounter with Milton Reserves. Milton scored three of their own goals through Paddy Collett and a Dan Hooton brace but Daz Craig hit a fourth for Spartan to give them their first taste of three points since the restart.

Cassington Rangers jumped to the top of Group 4 as they thrashed Chadlington Reserves 5-0. Gareth James hit a brace to give Cassington plenty of momentum but he was outdone by team mate Ross Lewington who hit a hat-trick to put Cassington at the summit after three games.

Supplementary Cup – Group 5
In an early battle of the top two sides, Hailey A visited Witney Royals Reserves on Tuesday night. It was always going to be a tight encounter with both sides in good form and so it proved. Ryan Stockford scoring the only goal of the game to maintain Hailey’s 100% start.

Bampton United Reserves also have two wins from two as they bested Kingham All Blacks Reserves by the odd goal in seven. Joe Paintin and Lewis Townsend gave Bampton the early advantage but they were pegged back by an Olly Peters penalty and a Brad Smith goal. Josh White scored Bampton’s third but back cam Kingham, Peters scoring his second goal of the game. Gary Mitchell fired home Bampton’s fourth to finish the scoring and put Bampton into the top two positions.

Supplementary Cup – Group 6
Ashley Edwards hit his fourth goal since the resumption of competitive football to help Aston Reserves to their first win in the Supplementary Cup. He wasn’t alone on the scoresheet as Harvey Gould, Bobby Harrison and Jack Scott also scored one goal each. James Macke hit back with a consolation for Spartan Rangers A but it finished 4-1.

FC Mills recorded a narrow 2-1 win over Chipping Norton Town to make it two wins in a row. Jonny Dunn scored for Chippy as they hunted their second win of the tournament but Steve Carvey’s brace fired FC Mills to victory and they jumped into second place in the process.
