John Fathers Junior Shield 2nd Round

Junior Shield joy as Witney & District prosper in the cup

Out of the 14 ties to include a Witney and District side in the 2nd round of the Junior Shield, 11 of them saw a victory for the local teams and they have made it into the draw for the 3rd round of the county cup competition.

It was seven of the best for Premiership sides Tower Hill and FC Hollybush as they both vanquished non W&D sides. Tower Hill beat Chequers 7-3 thanks to a penalty from Dan Cox and further goals from Jack Holifield, Ian Wright, Jamie Harris and a James Scott double. An own goal took the tally to seven. Craig Mays scored twice as FC Hollybush put seven past Union Street. Richard Williams, Dan Brearley, Lee Moseley, Chris Hirons and Alex Stubbs helped as Hollybush came through 7-2.

Witney Royals were also comfortable winners as they came through against Great Milton 4-1. Miles Roberts, Jamie Kennedy, Corey Donohoe and David Cross all got one each.

Milton needed extra time to defeat Banbury Rangers away from home. The score was 3-3 after 90 minutes but Dan Hooton, Paul Dray, Lewis Dady and Stephen Pearce (2) combined across the 120 minutes to see Milton home 5-3. Another W&D side visiting Banbury and, also needing extra time were Carterton Town A. This time it was 4-4 after 90 minutes thanks to a late equaliser for Town and they scored the winner with just five minutes to go in extra time. Fraser McCaw, Nick Rose, Sam Cairns and a Carl Ford double put Town into the hat for round three.

Hailey and Kirtlington, from the Premier Division, also advanced in far more comfortable circumstances. Hailey beat Masons Arms 5-2 inside 90 minutes with goals from Sam Wheeler, Freddie Buckingham, Perry Tinson and a Tom Gregory double. Shane Probitts scored a brace of his own along with a sole goal for Alex Metcalfe as Kirtlington won 3-1 against Goring United.

There were four fixtures which involved Witney and District teams on both sides of the pitch with no upsets to talk about this time around. Kingham kept up their impressive form of late by seeing off division three’s Chipping Norton Town. Matt Smith and Jack Knight scored for Chippy but were ultimately undone as Gaz Price, Dan Davies, Ryan Barrass and a Harry Noteman double saw Kingham through with a 5-2 win. Carterton Rangers also avoided an upset from a lower division side as they battled through against division one’s Chadlington. Josep Ribelles-Talans and Jamie MacDonogh scored one each for Rangers. Jordan Godfrey replied for Chadlington but it wasn’t to be.

In the all division one battle, Bampton United squeezed past Bletchington in another tight game. Bampton eventually prevailed 2-1 thanks to goals from Nathan Beckett and Chris Laurence. Jamie Wilkins replied for Bletchington.

It was a case of déjà vu for Aston as for the second week running they faced Charlbury and for the second week running they came away on the wrong side of a 5-1 score line. Aston took the early lead as Dave Rabbich scored inside 6 minutes. But Charlbury managed to get five different scorers on the sheet as they recovered well and stormed on to victory to advance through. Goals coming from Rhys Warner-Carter, Mark Goode, Warwick Tompkins, Stefan Lang and a 35 yard stunner from Josh Hunt.

There was disappointment for Wootton and Middle Barton as they succumbed to defeats to sides away from the Witney and District teams. Wootton went down 4-1 against Chasewell Park, Charlie Dunmall on the scoresheet for Wootton.

Middle Barton were able to run Hornton close but eventually lost 3-2. Sammy Ibrahim and Dan Bott both scored for Middle Barton.

Division One
With all their nearest opponents in Junior Shield action it was left to Stonesfield and Moreton Rangers to play out the only fixture in their league. The prize for the winners would be to sit atop the league for 7 days at least. Stonesfield proved to be the ones to rise to the challenge as they kept a clean sheet and stuck five past the visitors on an impressive afternoon for the home team. Raffy Rice scored two and was joined on the scoresheet by Carry Rice, George Redknapp and Tim Wyatt as Stonesfield took top spot off their opponents.

Division Two
A Jake Farrugia hat-trick helped Brize Norton defeat Corinthians 4-1. Richie Hall scored for Corinthians but John White added a fourth for Brize to send them second in the table.
Minster Lovell Reserves strengthened their grip at the top of the league by beating Charlbury Town Reserves 5-2. Mitchell Faulkner followed up from his hat-trick last week by scoring both goals for Charlbury but he was matched by Rob Hipkin who scored a twice for Minster and fellow team mates Stuart Mitchell, Seb White and Gary Mitchell all found the back of the net to maintain Minster’s lead at the top.

Ducklington and Hailey Reserves cancelled each other out as they attempted to carry on their pursuit of the league leaders. Ed Smith scored for Duck and Reuben Wertheim replied for Hailey as the score ended 1-1.

Division Three
A Cody Davies four timer sent Spartan Rangers Reserves back to the top of division three after handing out a 9-0 thumping of Tower Hill Reserves. Arrun White scored two, Jamie Timms and Frank Clarke scored one each and a Tower Hill own goal compounded a miserable afternoon on the pitch for them as Spartan did wonders for their goal difference in the process.
Spartan went top after a tense battle between previous league leaders Carterton Town B and third placed FC Mills ended in a goalless draw. Nothing could separate the sides inside 90 minutes. Town, now second, remain four points clear of their opponents and just two points behind Spartan Rangers Reserves.

Bourton Rovers Reserves clinched their first win of the season as they battled past Hook Norton. Chris Forrest scored a double for Hook Norton and Lee Mosson scored a double for Bourton but it was Ryan Newhook who proved the difference maker to give Bourton all three points.

Division Four
Both remaining 100% records disappeared in division four at the weekend as the top two both dropped points for the first time.
Kingham Reserves drew 2-2 with Milton Reserves to see their 100% record go. Liam Barnes and Adrian Williams scored for Kingham but Martin Kraus and Tomas Dozel replied for Milton to take away a point.

However, Stonesfield Reserves missed their opportunity to pinch top spot after also drawing, with FC Ascott. Gary O’Donovan scored for Ascott but his effort was cancelled out by Luke Prew as Stonesfield remain second on goal difference.

A Jayy Hewitt hat-trick managed to provide Eynsham SSC Reserves with enough ammunition to get their first win of the season. Harry Buckingham added a fourth for Eynsham as they dispatched Wootton Reserves 4-1. A Bradley Leach own goal put Wootton on the scoresheet at least.

Spartan Rangers A helped themselves to a second consecutive win by defeating FC Ascott Rangers 3-2. Mev Gundem scored for the 3rd game in a row for Spartan as team mate James Talbot slotted home a brace to give all three points to the home team. Steve Curran and Grant Oliver scored one each in consolation for defeated Rangers
