John Fathers Junior Shield

Positive ventures for Witney and District sides in John Fathers Junior Shield
The first weekend in October brought the Junior Shield to the attention of many sides in the Witney and District and overall, it was a positive weekend for many of the sides representing the local league.

The Junior Shield is one of the most prestigious competitions to be involved in for the local teams and one that the Witney and District sides take very seriously. In fact, over the last 10 seasons, the Witney and District have been represented in 8 of the last 10 finals and produced four winners as well.

There were 18 first round ties involving Witney and District sides and thirteen teams have progressed into round two, along with a few sides who were fortunate enough to receive first round byes. Pick of the bunch this weekend were FC Hollybush who were inspired by a Dan King hat-trick to romp past Brize Norton 9-2. There were also big wins, away from home, for Witney Royals, Milton and Bampton United.

A David Cross four timer helped Royals to a 6-0 win over Steeple Aston, Milton put five past Wroxton Sports without reply as they pushed on to round two and Bampton United also scored five against Bloxbury Athletic as they ran out 5-1 winners.

It was a mixed bag of results for the other Premier Division sides involved in the 1st Round. Along with Hollybush’s victory, Charlbury, Kirtlington and Tower Hill progressed through to round two with good home wins against teams from other leagues but Minster Lovell and Spartan Rangers fell at the first hurdle.

Chadlington were able to take advantage of being drawn against a lower division side from the Witney and District after beating Division Two Ducklington. Six different goal scorers helped them to beat Ducklington 7-2 but it was roles reversed as Division Two Siege were able to overcome Division One Combe 3-1 to allow Siege to progress to round two.

In the battle of the Division One sides it was Middle Barton who progressed over Stonesfield as the home side came through 2-1. Bletchington, another side from Division One also put their names in the hat for round 2, with a decent 4-2 away win against East Oxford.

Kingham have also progressed after a 2-1 victory over AS Hanwell and completing the sides through this weekend, Chipping Norton Town and Hailey received walkover victories after their opponents forfeited their games due to no side.

There were tough results for FC Mills, Witney Wanderers and FC Ascott as they succumbed to defeats to sides from other leagues.

Premier Division
Due to the number of sides involved in the Junior Shield, there was only one Premier Division fixture, a local derby between Carterton Town A and Carterton Rangers. Rangers emerged the victors in a scrappy affair with efforts from Matt Parry and Mykel Ryan giving them a 2-0 win.

Division Two
A big win for the second week in a row has pushed Corinthian’s to the top of Division Two, albeit on goal difference. A brace apiece for Richard Miller and Frank Webb, along with a Luke Cuthbert effort gave Corinthians a 5-1 win over Charlbury Town Reserves. Dom Hemmings was responsible for Town’s reply.

There were 6 goals in the divisions only other game as Minster Reserves and Hailey Reserves drew 3-3. Mo Semlali, Will Graham and Jack Wood had scored for the away side but Marcus Smith and a Josh White brace saw the points shared.

Division Three
It was the week for a change in fortunes for a couple of sides in Division Three this week, as two teams picked up their first points and wins of the season.
A Lee Spencer hat trick made all the difference as Wootton battled hard to overcome Bletchington Reserves 4-2. Michael Steers scored Wootton’s fourth whilst Wayne Harwood and Nigel Taylor got a goal each for Bletch.

Four different goal scorers helped Tower Hill Reserves off the foot of the table as they put four past fellow strugglers Witney Royals Reserves. Ian Barrett scored for Royals but Josh Carter, Lewis Scott, Chris Olive and Dan Bullock made sure of the points for Tower Hill.

The division’s other game produced a 9 goal thriller as Spartan Ranger Reserves beat Bourton Rovers Reserves 5-4. Bourton would have been hopeful for all 3 points as Max Sale, Lee Mosson and a Mark Payne brace helped them to score four away from home but Cody Davies popped up with a brace of his own for the home side and with goals from Gavin Kominek, Darren Craig and Arrun White, Spartan snatched all three points and jumped back to second in the league.

Division Four
Kingham Reserves kept up their 100% record for the current season by thrashing Spartan Rangers A 11-2 away from home. Adrian Williams and Chris Perrett both scored 4 each whilst Dan Alsworth and Darius Hodaei popped up with a goal each to help boost Kingham’s already impressive goal difference. Spartan were able to gain some consolation through James Spindlow and Matt Townsend.

Chadlington Reserves also remain at 100% and robbed Milton Reserves of their own 100% record in their victory at the weekend. Chad Wezyk (2), Ollie Jordan and Charlie White gave Chadlington all 3 points but even they couldn’t stop Dan Hooton from scoring his 10th goal of the season in grabbing Milton’s consolation.

Stonesfield Reserves were the other victors in the Division Four’s only other game. A Jamie Gardner hat trick and a goal for Liam Harris helped preserve Stonesfield’s own 100% record. Mark Mumford and Elliot Higgins scored in vain for Wootton Reserves as Stonesfield ran out 4-2 winners
