Jack Busby Cup Final

Charlbury Res lifted the Jack Busby Memorial Trophy

for the 4th time in their history but for the first time since 1985 defeating Hanborough Res 2-1 in dramatic style on Saturday night.
There was a decent crowd at Carterton as the game kicked off in bright sunshine on a rock hard pitch. Both sides struggled to find any fluency and passes were going astray in the tricky conditions. It would be fair the say the first half was not a thriller - For Charbury Shuan Godfrey hit the base of the post from a corner and Ryan Healing saw a goal bound effort kicked off the line by Eoin Burns.
Hanborough introduced Carl Williams at half time and his impact did put some life in his side, his free kick was there best effort but was comfortably saved by Shaun Akers. Damian Corbin had a half chance for Charlbury but his effort cleared the keeper and hit the top of the bar.
With no further chances the game went into extra time, and also immediately the deadlock was broken, defender Sean Godfrey came up for a Hanborough corner and he smashed home a loose ball. He could have added a second minutes later, but he failed to properly connect to a deep cross and the ball went behind.
In the second period Charlbury were pressing for the equaliser and a foul in the box gave them the chance to level, Corbin stepped up and although his spot kick was not great it beat Jack Lambourne. Then with penalties looming, referee David How, played a great advantage and let Charlbury continue, the ball ran to Tom Williams who thumped it past the advancing keeper to send the Charlbury players and supporters wild and helped them lift the cup.
